Richtis Gorge
Richtis Gorge is located on the north side of Lassithi prefecture between Agios Nikolaos and
Siteia. It is about 3km and to cross it you will need 3 or 4 hours of walking depending on the
pace. You start from Lahana arched stone bridge and you continue in a verdant landscape in
the river. The stone bridge shares a tragic story of the 19th century. During the exchange of
populations between Greece and Turkey in 1923, it is said that, at this point, Christians killed
the Turks of the region, who were trying to reach Sitia and get the boat to Turkey.
In your passage you will meet some old watermills. The highlight is the 20 meters waterfall
that forms a lake where you can swim. In Cretan dialect Richtis means waterfall thus the
name of the gorge. At the end of the gorge you will find the beautiful pebbly beach of Richti,
where there are tamarisk trees, stone seats, tables, and a stone fountain with drinking
water. The perfect place to experience Cretan nature at its best.
